The Gel Cutter cuts larger quantities of gel with greater precision in less time then ever previously possible. For any given gel cutting task this portable hand powered device allows a single operator to cut more gel with greater accuracy in the same period of time than two to three equally skilled individuals using any other method. This is done using a patented dual axis cutting mechanism specifically engineered for the needs of motion picture professionals.

Built with a 12" by 59" PVC cutting board mounted on a durable wood frame and supported by aluminum tubing collapsible legs it is easily stored on a truck or in the studio. The Gel Cutter has two flat-free foam filled wheels that allow it to be transported like a handtruck and a water resistant removable nylon cover with one pocket for storing rolls of gel, another for extra cutting blades and a third with a transparent heavy duty plastic face for paperwork.

At the center of its unique design is an aluminum bridge. The bridge runs along parallel stainless steel tracks located on opposite sides of the cutting board. Using these tracks the bridge is able to move up and down along the vertical axis of the cutting board. Mounted onto the side of this bridge is a single stainless steel track which extends along the width of the cutting board. Sliding along this horizontal track is the cutting module. This track allows the cutting module to move along the horizontal axis of the cutting board. In combination these three tracks provide for the two axes of motion that give the gel cutter an unprecedented combination of speed, accuracy and efficiency.

The cutting module itself has a full 360° of motion both clockwise and counterclockwise. It can be held in place anywhere along the horizontal track by tightening a knurled knob at its top. The module uses a number 19 exacto cutting blade which is held securely in place by a small knurled knob at it’s base. This second knurled knob allows for the easy replacement of cutting blades.

By utilizing this dual axis system the Gel Cutter can cut gel to any size. Gel is loaded onto the cutting board by threading gel (either loose leaf or on a roll) under the bridge from the rear of the machine. Once threaded gel can be cut using two methods: small cuts and large cuts.

The small cuts method provides maximum speed, efficiency and accuracy for gel cutting tasks that require gel cut to dimensions of 12" x 59" and smaller (ideal for babies, inkies and tweenies). Small cuts are made by cutting gel on the cutting board. Using this method over one hundred pieces of gel with dimensions of 11"x 11" or smaller, all accurate to 1/8", can be cut in less than ten minutes. The efficiency of the machine can easily be doubled by pulling two pieces of gel onto the cutting board simultaneously, one on top of the other. A popular combination of gels using this technique is a piece of color correction and a piece of diffusion.

The large cuts method is optimally designed for cutting pieces of gel with dimensions of 12" x 59" and larger. Large cuts are made by pulling the gel towards the operator while the cutting module is locked in place. While being pulled towards the operator the gel is held in place by a set of rollers below the bridge. This second method of cutting gel is ideal for large pieces of ND and color correcting gel often required for doors, windows and other large openings. Again all cuts are accurate to 1/8".
